Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire So Long As England's Ace Leaves His Ego at the Door.

One snub did the trick. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, even if it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the strategic frameworks and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.

Tuchel desires his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Individual quality is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when fame takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

Bellingham was given food for thought after his omission of the previous squad. He observed the national side secure their spot at the tournament in his absence. He watched the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach mention valuing the group’s energy and principles. Naturally, he has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for his club against their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder focused on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover for the youngster after proving that he is willing to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Jude just has a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. We all must help him and create an environment where he can use that intensity in matches and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

The star dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of support and direction. He has not played for England since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss could not ignore the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win against the German side this week.

The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to select another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Is selecting multiple creators to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping the captain's influence in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it disrupts the attacking balance. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this idea regarding him for years. I think it suits him best.”

He agreed there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a particular setup, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?

The manager talked about one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 against Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is also a moment to get the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in an international match versus the Scots in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.

“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him committed but he will be watching him carefully. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a powerful England team into an more effective one.
